5 Crucial Steps For Fantasy Hair Color Care

Reading Time: 4 minutes

After you get your fun color, what’s next? How do you care for such amazing art?

It may be a lot simpler than it seems.

Let’s begin with the number of times you shampoo your hair a week. It is highly recommended to shampoo your hair no more than once or twice a week. When you wash your hair, you will notice that some of the color comes out each time. The more often you shampoo and wash your hair, the more you fade out the color.  The less you wash your hair, the longer it will last!

If you have fine hair and you are someone who tends to shampoo more often, there is another option for you! I highly recommend switching out a couple of your wash days for a dry shampoo. The IGK Hair First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo is a must-have! The odor-eliminating charcoal powder helps to erase oil and keep you fresh for extra wash-free days.

After My Fantasy Hair Color Application, Can I Still Swim In The Pool and Ocean?

Yes and no. Avoid getting your hair wet in pools and the ocean when possible. These types of water have properties and chemicals in them that can take your color out in one go, Leaving you faded and needing a refresh.

Instead, try a swimmer’s cap or a deep conditioner to add a barrier between your hair and the water. If you’re not using a swimmer’s cap, My favorite deep conditioner is the Biolage Hydrasource Conditioning Balm because of its thick consistency.

Tip: after applying the conditioning balm, braid the hair and secure it with an elastic. This helps keep all your hair together and adds more protection. Less chance of the water getting into your hair.

Step 2: What Water Temperature Should You Use in the Shower For Best Fantasy Hair Color Results

I can still use hot water, right? I take hot showers.

Do NOT use hot water on your hair if you want that gorgeous color to last.

Washing in hot water opens your cuticle (the outer layer of your hair) and exposes the cortex(the middle layer of your hair responsible for the color/pigment). When you expose the cortex, the color go right down the drain, along with all of your freshly spent dollars!

It’s absolutely best to use cold water when washing your hair. Now, I’m not saying to completely take a cold shower, but at least switch to cold water when it’s time to shampoo those luscious locks. Washing in cold water is the best way to preserve your color and make it last longer. Coldwater seals your cuticle, which seals in your color! And if you’re getting more than one color, it keeps the colors from bleeding into each other.

Step 3: Choosing Your Shampoo For Long Lasting Fantasy Color effects

Now it’s time to choose your shampoo!

Take a look at what you’re currently using. Is it a professionally recommended color-care brand? If not, switch to a Color last/extend shampoo recommended by your stylist. This is a must-have product when caring for brightly colored hair. My go-to products are the Biolage Color Last shampoo and conditioner. And for those who get Keratin treatments,  Redken Color Extend sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner (the one in the pink bottle)

Okay! Now I’m good, right?

Almost.

Step 4:Can You Use Hot Hair tools After Fantasy Color Application?

Do you like to curl your hair or do you like it pin-straight?

When you use a blow dryer or hot tools like curling irons and flat irons, or even out in the sun, (yes this includes summer vacations at the lake)  your hair is exposed to heat.  Heat protectant adds a barrier between your hair and the heat, protecting your color against fading. IGK Good Behavior and the IGK Bouncy Blowout Cream are my go-to’s for heat protection up to 450°.

That being said, please, please, please don’t set your flat iron or curling iron that high. For most hair types, 300-350 is ideal. Over use of flat irons and curling irons can not only damage your hair but over time can fade the color.

Step 5:When Should I Refresh My Fantasy Color (optional)

Can’t I refresh my color at home myself?

There can be multiple answers to this question and the final answer should be determined by your stylist specifically.

If you’re working with more than one fantasy color in your hair, the answer is likely “no”.

However, if you’re working with one solid fantasy color all over, there are a couple of options.

Option one would be something a “color bomb.” Now how your stylist customizes your bomb would also be up to them as well. The typical bomb would be created using Olaplex 3 and a drop(or more) of your color. You would then apply the treatment at home after shampooing and towel drying your hair lightly. Keep in mind that some highly pigmented colors may stain your shower, and a pair of gloves and a processing cap may be recommended to prevent any staining.

Option two would be to purchase a professional brand color care shampoo or conditioner such as Celeb Luxury’s Viral collection. This specific brand is color depositing and has color options from all over the wheel including red, blue, yellow, green, and even pastel tones such as silver and rose gold. Again, don’t forget to check with your stylist to be sure if this is a good candidate for you and which specific shade would work best with your color.

What You Should Avoid After Your Fantasy Color Application

Also, avoid buying drugstore products or generic products. Third-party sellers such as TJ Maxx, Amazon, etc. are also not recommended. More often than not, the product could be expired or it could be the entirely wrong product in general. Be cautious of where you purchase products and always use what your stylist recommends. Big retailers such as Ulta and Sephora should be perfectly fine as well as buying directly online from the company itself. Otherwise, support your local hairstylist and buy straight from your salon!  Contact Us Today for Any Fantasy Hair Color Application!
